what is it to think as an artist?
In the age of AI, to think like an artist is to create using your unique lived human experience and imagination, and create something only I can create. However, you can choose to use AI as a tool to assist us.

In this tile, I was inspired by our walk activity, and I went back through my entire camera roll and cut out detailed images of things I never truly noticed before. The images are a part of places I've travelled to, meals I've eaten, landmarks, and other random experiences, and each image reminds me exactly of what transpired. I wanted to merge these images together to create this organic shape that represents my unique human “soul” and experience.
I got this “shield” out of a poster on a UBC signpost during our walk activity, and decided to cut it out and turn it into a shield after being inspired by looking at the writing exercise of different ways to look at things. The shield is defending tile one and is a metaphor for how artists have to protect ourselves against AI. In addition, I used an arrow of AI writing and also an arrow I cut out to segway to tile one and three, but also to talk about the threats AI has to artists if we are not careful.
In this tile, I asked ChatGPT to interpret my collage from tile one. I took what ChatGPT wrote and then cut out the shape of my original image. It, of course, could not accurately tell me about each of my images and even forgot to mention some of them. This result showed me that AI was able to analyze the structure of my collage, but it failed to tell me about the personal meaning and intention behind each image. This tile illustrates how AI can not truly recreate you're experiences and imagination and that AI is better used as a tool or companion rather than the sole proprietor or replacement of the creative process.
